Scoop…what can I say?
Last Friday night I was at my apartment with some friends just hanging out. We were all ready to go out somewhere but we had no idea where we wanted to go. A friend of mine called his friends and he said they were going to Scoop. Normally I wouldn’t go to Scoop since I don’t enjoy that kind of a scene or atmosphere but I thought, “Everyone’s going, so I might as well join.”
I haven’t been to Scoop since it reopened. I imagined it was going to be just like Deko and it was… just a lot smaller. I don’t know why I ever agree to go to these college bars. I never have a good time and it’s just grimy, which is the same I can say for Scoop.
For some reason everything is wet and sticky. I don’t get that. It’s obviously from spilled beer throughout the night, but you can be the first person there and it will still be just as wet and sticky. All the barstools and countertops are just wood painted black. I don’t even know why they have stuff to sit on because they only have about 12 seats and no one wants to sit on a disgusting sticky stool anyway.
Regardless, no one wants to sit down anyway (except for the girl I saw running around barefoot, she probably needed to sit down). They’re all too busy grinding on each other and graphically making out (and sometimes going a little further than that) to the clichéd music being played by the D.J. I don’t even know why they hire a D.J. because all they do is play songs from the radio.
I know some might say, “Well you don’t like the music on the radio and you’re just jealous because you’re not the one making out. You’re just a hater.” It may be true that I don’t like the music but that doesn’t mean I’m going to have a bad time. I can appreciate the music when I go out because it puts you in a “going out” mood and that’s its purpose. I don’t have a good time because the place is humid from the mass of drunk, sweaty bodies covered in spilled beer that are forcibly rubbing against each other because the place is so packed.
People might just say, “That’s partying. You don’t like to party.” That’s not partying. I don’t think Drake or Kanye West would ever step foot in a place like that. They’d probably be just as disgusted as I am. I know some of you will make the argument that T-Pain went to Scoop after his concert at the UCF Arena, but that’s T-Pain. Enough said.
So anyway, it’s so hot and disgusting in there so I decide to take my girlfriend outside with me. Outside was better because it was quieter. We also had a source of entertainment from all the black-out drunk, shirtless kids arguing with the bouncers and trying to sneak back into Scoop because they’ve been thrown out for being too belligerent. One of the shirtless people actually hopped over the little fence and absorbed the blow of his landing with his head. It was pretty funny.
After a little bit more of being uncomfortable I decided to leave. As I was walking back to my car (which was nowhere near the plaza because there’s never any parking there at night) I remembered one of the reasons I was drawn there was because of my cheap budget. There were free drafts and drinks from 9 p.m. until midnight. It didn’t matter though because it took forever to get a drink. Most of the bartenders stay chatting with their friends.
I know a lot of people go to these bars because everyone goes there. A lot of people go because anyone can go. I believe you can be 18 and still get in most places but I can be wrong with that. These bars are also very close to UCF and they have very cheap specials, but these facts don’t make up for what you have to put up with when you go. I think these bars need to clean up and class up to be more enjoyable and enticing. Then again, it might just not be for me. It doesn’t matter because it’s all going to be torn down anyway.
