First Taste: Bud Light Platinum and Guinness Black Lager
Bud Light Platinum
I’ve wanted to try Bud Light Platinum since it came out so I decided to go to the store and give it a try. As I was leaving the cashier asked me, “Have you tried that yet?” to which I replied no. She then said “It’s good, but watch out because it’s stronger.” This intrigued me even more.
When I got home, I noticed the bottles of Bud Light Platinum right away. It comes in a unique blue bottle with a silver bottle cap. I thought the bottle looked pretty cool. The 6 percent alcohol by volume is plastered all over the case the bottles came in and is also seen on the neck of the bottle. It seems like Anheuser-Busch really wanted to advertise that aspect of the beer. Now, it was time to try it.
After tasting Bud Light Platinum, I was pretty disappointed, although I didn’t really have any high hopes for it because it’s a product of Budweiser. It tasted almost exactly the same as Bud Light. The only difference is that it tastes slightly heavier, a little bit fuller. It also tasted a little bit fruity to me also. One of my friends also tasted the fruitiness. Another friend said it tasted just like Keystone Light.
Bud Light Platinum seems to just be for people who want to get drunk quicker off a light beer, that is, if you want to call Bud Light Platinum a light beer. I know that most beers with a higher alcohol by volume always have more calories. After doing some research, I found out that Bud Light Platinum has 137 calories, as opposed to Bud Light’s 110 calories with a 4.2 percent alcohol by volume. It shouldn’t even be classified as a light beer in my eyes.
I don’t think I’ll be purchasing Bud Light Platinum again. I’d rather buy a better beer, that isn’t light, and actually enjoy it.
Guinness Black Lager
I’m a fan of Guinness. Ever since I saw an advertisement for Guinness Black Lager, I couldn’t wait to try it. I was wondering what Guinness could have possibly done to make a different beer, because I already enjoy their recipe as it is.
Upon trying Guinness Black Lager I was impressed. It is a good beer, but it doesn’t taste as good as a Guinness Extra Stout or Draught. The difference in the taste can be attributed to the fact that it is a lager. It doesn’t have the heavy, full, creamy taste that comes with a draught or a stout. This can be credited to the fact that Guinness is trying to expand its horizons. Apparently, their sales haven’t been that great in Europe and Guinness made Black Lager with the intentions of appealing to a younger audience who prefers to drink bottled lagers as opposed to pints of beer.
Black Lager still has a good, dark taste. I’d prefer it over most of the lagers out there and would definitely drink it over Samuel Adams. You definitely know you’re drinking a Guinness when drinking a Black Lager. I think Guinness did a good job straying from their comfort zone and creating a lager.
Black Lager has 4.5 percent alcohol by volume and 135 calories. I could see myself buying Guinness Black Lager again. It is not something I could see myself frequently buying, because I would prefer the stout or draught over it, but if I’m in the mood for a lager and I’m at a bar or shopping at Publix and it catches my eye, I’ll definitely be happy to purchase it again.
