Spring Break Tips:

• Use sunscreen. Wherever you go on spring break, make sure you bring plenty of sunscreen. If you get sunburned the first day, your entire break will be ruined. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin and hydrocortisone cream help relieve the pain and inflammation, along with Aloe vera lotion or gel.

• Be careful when drinking in the sun. The sun can increase the effects of alcohol and also increase dehydration. Be sure to keep yourself hydrated.

• Make sure you know the laws about drinking on the beach wherever you go. Some places allow it, and some places don’t.

• Watch out for traffic when leaving bars or clubs. There may be a lot of commotion and even possibly drunk or drugged-up drivers.

• If you’re at the beach and find yourself stung by a jellyfish, don’t rub it or touch it. Try to find a lifeguard. They usually have something with them for jellyfish stings.

• Don’t do anything stupid on balconies, especially when you’re drunk.

• Don’t go anywhere by yourself. There are large crowds everywhere, and it’s easy to get lost or put yourself in danger when alone. Always go somewhere with at least one person you know.

• Watch out for strong tides and currents.

• Don’t ever leave your drink unattended. Watch your drink being made too because there is a chance someone will drug you. If you put your drink down and walk away, just order a new one.

• You don’t have to hook up with someone on your spring break. It isn’t a necessity, but if you do make sure you use protection.

• If you’re going on a road trip, plan your trip ahead of time and stick to main roads and highways.

• If you’re flying somewhere, make sure you have a safe way to get to and from the hotel and the airport.

• If you’re leaving the country, make sure you have the proper identification and documents you need to travel. You wouldn’t want to end up stuck in a foreign country.

• Make sure you know the legal drinking age if leaving the country. Some countries take their drinking laws very seriously.

• Make sure you bring more than enough money for your trip. This is a double-edged sword because if you end up being pick pocketed, you’ll lose more, but you also don’t want to end up in an unfamiliar location with no money at all. A typical trip to Cancun will cost $1,000 to $1,500 (excluding airfare or gas).

• Make sure to pack medicine and sunglasses for wherever you go.

• Try to get a room above the first floor when staying in a hotel. They’re harder to break into.

• Drinking in a hot tub dilates your blood vessels and lowers your blood pressure, making you feel the effects of alcohol faster. Don’t do it. You can pass out and end up drowning.

• Don’t leave a sickly drunk friend (or any drunk person) unattended. Make sure they get help.

• If you’re going on a cruise, be careful when you get off at ports of call. You can get robbed or have even worse things happen to you.

• Keep yourself hydrated at all times.
