Film hype from Comic-Con

7/31/10 10:33 PM

The internet has been buzzing the past week and that buzz is about Comic-Con. Over the past few years, many film companies have used the San Diego Comic-Con as a barometer for the hype of their films. These conventions are known for the cosplay, a.k.a. dressing up as your favorite fictional characters, but it’s also known for its high concentration of fanboys.   All it takes is a group of disappointed fanboys to flood the internet with bad buzz and destroy the hype for a film. Here are my thoughts on some of the most high-profile films hyped at this year’s Con.   Tron Legacy (Dec. 17): I’m psyched for this film. The original film was, whether you loved it or not, an 80’s classic. The sequel looks to keep true to its roots while looking like what...

Film shows modern origins for the soldiers of fortune

7/13/10 12:59 AM

A group of Iraq War veterans were accused of a crime they didn’t commit. Now, they have resurfaced as a summer blockbuster. If you want a good time and can find a theater, then you can watch “The A-Team”. “The A-Team” is a remake of the 1980s TV series. This generation’s A-Team is written/directed by Joe Carnahan (Smokin’ Aces) and features some newcomers and rising stars: Liam Neeson (Taken), Bradley Cooper (The Hangover), Sharlto Copley (District 9) and UFC fighter Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson. This film is more like a modern origins story for the A-Team. The film begins with the four meeting each other and ends with them as “soldiers of fortune” just like the TV series. The plot is about an elite unit of...

Movies with patriotic flare

7/2/10 2:17 PM

Despite America losing to Ghana in the World Cup, again, I’m still feeling pride in the USA. This week, theaters will be overcrowded with Twilight minions and disappointed people walking away from The Last Airbender. So if you need to get your movie fix, this would be a good weekend to stay home and rent some movies with a patriotic flair. Below is a list of films that will leave you cheering for the red, white and blue. Independence Day – The Fourth of July is about big explosions and it’s hard not to forget Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day. The 1996 blockbuster had aliens on the brink of destroying the world but Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum had something to say about it. Besides the memorable special effects, I...

Green Street Hooligans

6/25/10 8:25 PM

I don’t know about you, but I’ve got World Cup fever. We have reached the halfway point in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and I figured I would discuss a football movie to go along with the festivities. By the way, soccer will be known as football for the rest of this column. Sports and films are my two biggest loves, but sports films tend to get a little repetitive and formulaic. This is where the 2005 film “Green Street Hooligans” comes in. GSH stars Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) as Matt Buckner, a journalism student recently expelled from Harvard because he was set up by his cocaine dealing roommate. His roommate comes from a political family and Matt knows he can’t defend himself, so he catches the next flight to London to...

"Splice" creates something different

6/17/10 11:21 AM

The phrase, “what’s the worst that can happen” is a clear sign that the worst will happen. A little commonsense goes a long way when you are creating a new species; thinking that it’s all going to work out fine is asinine. After taking a year-long film festival tour, “Splice” has finally arrived in theaters. “Splice”comes from a good gene pool; directed by Vincenzo Natali (“The Cube”) and produced by Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”). Splice is about two married genetic scientists, Clive played by Adrian Brody of “The Pianist”and Elsa played by Sarah Polley of the “Dawn of the Dead” remake, who combine various...
