The Knights came out swinging and pounded UAB 42-7. Yes, that same Knights team that lost with 24 seconds on to Kansas State, beat that UAB team that pushed Tennessee to the limit.
From the get-go the Knights came out sharp rattling both UAB quarterbacks, holding the main passer Bryan Ellis to 14-of-30 for 149 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, and the run happy David Isabelle to 62 yards on 12 carries.
UCF was led on the ground by freshman quarterback Jeff Godfrey who had 80 yards on 9 carries while completing 9-of-11 passes for 137 yards. Junior Rob Calabrese split time with Godfrey and also looked sharp connecting on all three passes for 34 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown, and adding 40 rushing yards on five carries.
However, it was Ronnie Weaver leading the way for UCF's scoring offense punching it in two times while tallying 50 yards on the ground.
WHY UCF WON
The defense. Josh Robinson returned a fumble 56 yards, and Troy Davis picked off a pass and took it to the house traveling 29 yards giving the Knights offense some cushion, and taking any dreams of a comeback UAB had and stomping them. At one point right after half-time UAB had only six total yards of offense. UCF had an interception and two fumble recoveries which led 21 points off turnovers ultimately doomed UAB, and the defensive pressure the Knights put on the Blazer's quarterbacks allowed the defense to do as they pleased.
MOMENTUM CHANGER
UCF took over at their own 47-yard line after a UAB punt with 5:56 left on the clock, and on the very first play from scrimmage Jeff Godfrey ran for 35 yards to the UAB 18-yard line setting up a Ronnie Weaver touchdown run from two yards out. The Knights went up 14-0 and never looked back.
DEAL SEALER
The Blazers came out and were moving the ball to start the second half, but when David Isabelle took off on a broken play he fumbled and Johnny-on-the-spot was Josh Robinson who picked up the lose ball and took off down the sideline for a 56-yard touchdown putting the Knights up 28-0.
NOTEWORTHY
Josh Robinson's 56-yard fumble return was the longest play for the Knights in over eight seasons. In 2002 against Akron, Peter Sands had a fumble return for 64 yards.
The duo of Godfrey and Calabrese went a combined 12-of-14 for the game. They totaled 171 yards in the game through the air with Calabrese's 4-yard TD being the only score.
Bruce Miller recorded his 30th career sack when he brought down Bryan Ellis in the first half. His 30 career sacks are most among active college players and nobody tops his 50 career tackles for a loss.
