About 250 UCF students and Orlando residents packed Wackadoo's Bar and Grill for "Funny Bones Open Mic Knight." The event allowed any one with courage to step on stage and perform a stand-up routine in front of a live audience.

The contestants were judged on five categories: content, time, creativity, pace and delivery. The funniest comedian would win the chance to open for comedian Charlie Murphy in CAB's November comedy show at the Venue.

"We wanted to give students an incentive to perform," CAB event coordinator, Alex Nelinson, said. "We didn't have many people on stage at our earlier open mic events because we didn't have any way to reward the comedians. Then we had an idea to have the funniest comedian open for Charlie Murphy."

Almost 20 UCF students and five other amateur comedians walked on stage and attempted to leave the crowd in stitches. Sophomore Film Major Jared Russo went on stage to perform in front of a live audience for the first time.

"Beforehand, it was really nerve racking," Russo said after the show. "But when you get up on stage and you have the microphone in your hand, no nerves. And once the first joke hits and you get some laughs, it's the greatest feeling in the world."

Russo spoke about dating and oral contraceptives. He also did impressions of Al Pacino at Baskin Robbins and Admiral Ackbar at Saw 3D.

Though UCF students brought their best material, Winter Park amateur comedian Nick Pupo took home the crown and the Venue gig. Pupo wowed the crowd with his routine.

"I've only been doing this for five months," Pupo said. "So I was just as nervous as most of the other amateurs. I've never done a gig nearly as big as opening for Charlie Murphy. I'll be ready though."

Nelinson said that he plans on making this a monthly CAB event.

"Every event we'll come up with something different. We won't be able to have a comedian like Charlie Murphy every time, but whether we give theme park tickets, or possibly opening for a comedian at the Improv, we just want to give people motivation to compete."

Charlie Murphy will be live at the Venue November 17th. Tickets are $5 for students and $15 for the general public.
