One week ago I'd never been inside, let alone heard of, Natura Coffee and Tea — a coffee bar nestled in Collegiate Square across the street from UCF.
Located in such a prime spot it's a wonder that more people don't know about Natura Coffee and Tea.
The minute I walked in I knew there was something different about this place.
It could have been the outlandishly decorated guitars hanging on the wall. It could have been the paintings and drawings of naked women, among others, that occupied the adjacent wall. It could have been the warm, vibrant feeling that hit me when I walked in and told me, "This looks like a good place to chill for tonight."
Or it could have been all of the above.
Natura offers a wide selection of assortments including hookah, beer, coffee and tea (obviously), wine and a variety of meals such as quesadillas and hummus. Recently, the coffee bar has undergone major renovations, revamping its look and adding a low-key, polished vibe to the venue. Some of the staples of Natura have stayed the same. They still have two different types of hookah: Premium and home blend. The home blend hookahs are a little cheaper than the premium and offer traditional flavors such as double apple, grape and peach. The premium, while being a little more expensive, offer unique flavors like strawberry daiquiri, apple martini and pumpkin pie.
I couldn't help but notice the different types of beer they have as well, perfect for the coveted addition: A new bar.
Except for Heineken, Guinness and Corona, I hadn't heard of any of the beers that were stocked in the refrigerator behind the bar. One beer that caught my attention was Boddington Pub Ale, solely for the design of its can. One customer described it as the signature UCF beer because of its black and gold design. Another thing I noticed was the lack of domestic beer, which can perhaps be attributed to the recent change in ownership.
Paula Phipps, a former record executive from the U.K., recently acquired the bar in September and has put in quite a few changes.
"I wanted to open my own music venue with live music and not the typical Starbucks venue," Phipps said. The bar and a bench in the back corner were built to further accommodate customers. All the paintings mentioned before are new and are also on sale.
Natura is restructuring its lunch and dinner menus lunch and dinner menus as well. Dishes are being taken off the menu in order to concentrate on quality instead of quantity.
"Simplicity is the key," said one of the waitresses.
During the day Natura can be a place to come and study or just kick back and relax. At night, things get a little more active.
Natura offers four weekly events. Monday's Film Night allows UCF and Full Sail students to showcase film projects. Thursday's Open Mic Night boasts a top prize of three hours of professional time in a recording studio. Sunday's DJ Night hosts art students from UCF and their live art, set to the sounds of a DJ or acoustic act. Wednesday features jazz artists, and the rest of the week is booked for live performances from poetry readings to bands.
"It's a very relaxed atmosphere and has free Wi-Fi if you want to hang out and study," Gabriella Soto, an early childhood education major, said. "Out of all the hookah places, I like this one the most because of the live music and the people are very diverse."
If you're looking for an alternative to Scoop or The Library, then Natura is where you want to be.
