The Knights basketball team strengthened its already-impressive 2011 recruiting class Wednesday when it announced that four star center Michael Chandler (Indianapolis) signed a National Letter of Intent to play for UCF in the fall.
"We are extremely excited about adding Mike to our program," said head coach Donnie Jones through a release.
Chandler, who is 6-foot-10, is considered to be one of the best centers in the nation. Rivals and ESPN has Chandler ranked as the No. 4 and No. 5 center of the draft class, respectively.
The signing gives the Knights a much-needed inside presence, as center Tom Herzog and forward A.J. Tyler both graduated. Chandler is the highest-ranked prospect to ever sign with the Knights, and has the skill level to contribute right away.
"He has a huge upside with his abilities," Jones said.
Chandler chose UCF over a many offers, including basketball powerhouses Kentucky, Louisville, St. John's, West Virginia and Xavier.
At Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Chandler averaged 19.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 4.0 blocks and 2.0 assists per game. Earlier this month, Chandler announced he will move to Kentucky to finish his senior year of high school there.
"He has a great skill level," Jones said. "Mike is a big man who can score in the post, run the floor and rebound."
The Knights now have four prospects signed between Chandler, Rod Days, Wayne Martin and Kasey Wilson. The four prospects give UCF a much bigger lineup, with all four prospects 6-foot-6-inches or taller.
