The sound of heels stomping across a raised runway resonated through a room of about 150 people Wednesday night. Cameras started flashing as a UCF student donned head-to-toe in clothing and accessories from local boutiques steps onto the runway, struts to the end and then strikes a pose.
Her Campus UCF presented their first fashion show called "Her Show" in the Cape Florida Ballroom on Wednesday. The event featured UCF students modeling fall clothing collections from local boutiques. Those who attended could walk a red carpet and get their photographs taken before being seated or standing around the black raised platform.
Her Campus is an online magazine geared toward college women that individualizes its content college by college.
"We want to bring a little fashion to Orlando," Nicole Lucas said to open the show. The former America's Next Top Model contestant and junior psychology major hosted and modeled for the event.
Lucas appeared on America's Next Top Model Cycle 16 this past February and March. While she said her experience with the show wasn't "ideal" because of the drama and the constant filming, she was nervous and excited about introducing the fashion show and getting back out on the runway.
"I've actually never hosted an event," Lucas said. "But I like pushing myself to do things I've never done before. I feel it makes me a stronger person. But I'm really excited; I haven't modeled in a while now since the show."
The event showcased four different collections from Boutique Twenty Two, Francesca's Collections, Downtown Divas, and Rent the Runway at UCF. There was an explosion of color and patterns as models walked out wearing floral dresses, striped cardigans, skinny jeans and an assortment of accessories.
The final collection consisted of sleek black mini dresses and gold shimmer skirts as well as other designer pieces. These outfits were provided by Rent the Runaway, a website that allows members to rent clothes and accessories from more than 95 designers for 90 percent off retail prices.
"They did a really good job of getting all the clothes from the local boutiques," said Elissa Nadaskay, a senior event management major. "Rent the Runway was really impressive. If I had an event worthy of it, then I would definitely consider it."
The UCF branch of the online magazine launched in February 2010 and features articles on campus news, events, profiles and polls. Written by UCF students, it serves as a place for the women of the UCF community to get personalized information about what's happening on campus. Sara Newton, the editor-in-chief of Her Campus UCF and a senior interpersonal and organizational communication major, described the publication's slogan as "a collegiette's guide to life."
"I know a lot of our girls are into fashion. I love fashion personally, but I just wanted to have a great event to have the most people to come out to," Newton said. "The fashion show is to let people know we're here, we're on campus, people can join or be a fan. We're easily accessible."
Students who attended the event said they enjoyed it and wouldn't mind if the runway were to return to UCF.
"They should definitely do it again. It'll only get better," said Michael Stavredes, a sophomore finance and economics major.
