The Central Florida Future is the independent, student-written newspaper at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the fall and spring semesters and Mondays only during summer, issues are distributed to over 200 locations on and around the UCF campus.
Published since the university first held classes on October 7, 1968, the name Future was derived from the original name of UCF, Florida Technological University (FuTUre). After the university changed its name on Dec. 6, 1978 to the University of Central Florida, the publication became the Central Florida Future.
In its early years, the newspaper published from an office located on the second floor of the library, and later beginning in 1976, from a trailer behind the Seminole Hall dorms. In 1993, the UCF administration chose to make the newspaper independent of the university, and the newspaper moved across the street from campus. Since 2002, the newspaper has published from University Court, an office complex just west of UCF at University Blvd. and Rouse Rd. The UCF administration plays no official role in its publication.
Over 50 students both within and outside of the communications department compose, edit and layout each issue as well as sell advertising. The Central Florida Future does not receive any direct funding from the university and serves to provide independent news and opinion to UCF and the surrounding community.
