Lack of 'sexy names' shouldn't damper solid class

National Signing Day.

It's the one day a year it's okay to care about decisions high school athletes make more than your job, school, pets, family and personal hygiene.

For UCF fans, this day of anticipation and celebration may have seemed a little dry. But don't let the glamour of signing day or the amount stars by the player's names decide how you feel about this year's group of incoming players.

Although coach George O'Leary is not bringing in any "sexy names", as he put it in a signing day press conference, the class offers solid players at positions of need.

The Knights came into the height of recruiting season in serious need of quarterbacks, depth on both sides of the line, size at receiver and more talent at linebacker. Besides missing on a few linebackers, the coaching staff did a pretty good job of addressing needs in a recruiting year that was doomed from the start.

The resignation of whom many believed was UCF's top recruiter, David Kelly, departure of who was briefly the defensive coordinator, Ted Roof, loss of the teams special teams coach, Tim Salem, and the general threat of NCAA punishment is enough to scare even the most loyal recruits away.

Those reasons alone counteract the positive of the school's future in the Big East and the allure of the Big East will not be a major factor to recruits for at least another year. The coaches were fighting an uphill battle trying to win recruits this year.

The biggest positive of the 2012 class is the transfer players coming in. Players like offensive lineman Phil Smith, quarterback Tyler Gabbert and running back Storm Johnson can make immediate impacts.

Although O'Leary and the coaching staff did not bring in any huge names this year, don't sell your season tickets just yet. Impact players were brought in and most importantly, needs were met.
