Gov. Rick Scott came to UCF Tuesday to attend the Board of Governors luncheon where he briefly discussed budget cuts in the state university system.
“Funding has not been easy… tuition has gone up, I think, 71 percent in the last four years,” Scott said. “That’s one concern I have — the unbelievable increase.”
Scott said his other major concerns regarding Florida’s state university system are out-of-pocket costs for college, the rapidly increasing amount of student loan debt and making sure that graduates are able to find jobs in their field of study.
Currently, 49 percent of undergraduate students at UCF graduate with no debt, according to Hitt.
Scott also emphasized several times that students should earn STEM degrees because that’s where he said the job openings are.
“I believe we have an obligation to let our students know where we believe the jobs will be,” he said. “I think we need to be No. 1 in STEM degrees. That’s where there’s jobs today, there’s openings.”
A doctoral program in hospitality management was also approved by the Board of Governors, effective fall 2012. The program will be built from a program that already exists within the College of Education.
