The sound of heavy bass music could be heard as students walked up the sidewalk to Brooklyn Pizza on Thursday night for Campus Activities Board's "Welcome Back Party for Spring 2012: A Knight to Remember in Black and White."
Inside, a DJ played songs from today and the 1990s on turntables. Free promotional items such as souvenir cups were given away throughout the night, as well as free pizza and drinks. A photographer was also at the party, snapping pictures of guests who wished to capture the memories of the night.
In light of the theme of the night, students were encouraged to dress in black and white. Many students arrived in black and white, ready to dance and enjoy themselves.
Lauren Jenkins, a junior marketing major and special events director for CAB, said the committee voted on the theme and wanted something classier than past events. Jenkins said the event was meant to be classy, yet casual. Jenkins said the committee wanted to do something different, but still wanted students to have fun.
"Dance parties are always fun for students," Jenkins said.
News of the event was spread through a variety of ways. Freshmen Brianna Williams and Emilie Sylvester, both of whom volunteer with CAB, were invited through some of the CAB directors.
"I thought it would be fun to come out to the event," said Williams, a cinema studies major.
"I figured it would be a fun time. It was something to do," said Sylvester, an undeclared freshman. Sylvester said she was also interested in the giveaways.
Freshman biology major Catherina Vernon said she first heard about the event on Facebook, but a friend told her to come.
"I've been to an event in the summer, the ‘90's party, and I expected this to be the same," Vernon said.
Jenkins hoped that between 150 and 200 students would come out to the event. According to Jenkins, 179 students arrived to dance and have a great time. Jenkins said that CAB will have more events throughout the semester, but not all of them will be dancing parties. The next major event hosted by CAB will be "Rolling with the Cabbies" in February, which will be a dance/roller skate party.
Overall, the night received mixed reviews from the students. While Vernon said it was OK besides there not being a wider variety of music, Williams said she found the event to be refreshing. Sylvester also enjoyed herself at the party.
"It was fun," said Sylvester. "I enjoyed it. It was a good time had by all."
