The Student Government Association is encouraging students in need to take a different type of test before going home for winter break.

For the first time ever, on Dec. 1, World AIDS Day, there will be free HIV testing for students in the Multicultural Student Center, provided by SGA.

The testing will take place in the MSC office located in the Student Union from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"With this service, students who are unsure of where to go for help will be able to get tested in a safe environment and take advantage of free counseling sessions as well," said Trevor Persaud, SGA diversity iniatives director.

In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the first AIDS diagnosis, there will be also a workshop hosted by SGA and MSC in Engineering 2 room 102, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Michael Freeman, the assistant director of UCF's Office of Diversity Initiatives, will give a speech on topic of, "30 Years Later: Why We Still Need to Talk About It." Also, a World AIDS Day banquet, which is free for all UCF students and includes dinner, will feature another keynote speaker, at 7 p.m. in the Pegasus Ballroom.

"We are proud to be putting on an event that helps raise awareness about World AIDS Day," said Matthew McCann, student body president . "The workshop and speakers will undoubtedly provide plenty of insights on the HIV pandemic, which has been prevalent for nearly three decades."
