Dell and Macbook laptops, cameras and tablet computers are popular items for theft on campus. After a surge in laptop theft from the Library last year, students can register their contact and product serial information online in case of theft.

Williamson used the police department as an example.

“It’s easy enough for property inventory people to come by and scan all of our property and make sure that we have everything,” he said as he tapped the barcode sticker on his computer tower.

UCF Police can even add an app to make sure that every piece of property the department is responsible for is there.

Unless something is on record, Williamson said, the chance for property recovery is slim.

“Without this information, it’s as good as gone,” Williamson said.
