Worshippers and attendees sit in the main hall where the the Sikh holy book, Guru Granth Sahib, is kept covered in silken cloths known as Rumala.
Sundeep Singh, an undergraduate UCF student double-majoring in finance and accounting, first heard about the shooting on NPR News while driving. He would have called his parents, he said, but he was already almost home.
“It was hard for me to relate to,” Sundeep said. “This is the first time something like this happened to our community.”
Sundeep said it is part of Sikh culture that when someone passes away, you don’t put all the grieving on one community. He said he wants people to understand the different faiths and that there is more to people than just what someone sees.
“That is what we are doing right now, teaching people about our culture, grieving for those who passed away,” Sundeep said.
