You could hear the music and smell the food if you were anywhere near the Lake Claire Recreation Center Saturday morning. The UCF Sport Clubs Council held a yard sale event from 8 a.m. to noon to help UCF sport clubs raise money.
It may have been an early start but UCF Sport Clubs Council was ready, they had a Knightcast DJ, four food trucks from The Food Truck Bazaar, a rock climbing wall and 13 clubs with tables piled high ready to make a sale. Melissa's Chicken & Waffles appeared to be the most popular food truck, with their famous egg, chicken and sausage waffle sandwiches in the hands of many attendees. They had a steady line of customers throughout the day.
Each club represented had its own selling table, where they placed the items they were selling. Club members were told to collect their own items to sell at the event. The selling tables had anything from books and clothes to bikes and grills.
The Rocking Climbing Club had a rock wall by their table to help draw people driving by into the yard sale. Alex Velandia, a junior at UCF and a graphic design student said the team has been national champions three years running now.
The event caught the attention of people like Tracy Walters, a local to the Orlando area who saw a sign for the event while driving by. Walters was able to find the first book in the Twilight Saga at the Women's Lacrosse Club's table.
"I have read them all already but this is the only book missing from my collection" Walters said.
Catherine Garland, the Sport Clubs Councils Coordinator said their goal was to a council-wide fundraiser. They wanted not only to raise money, but to allow the clubs to have fun together and provide the community with more information about sport clubs on campus.
According to Garland each sport club is responsible for raising about 70 percent to 80 percent of their budgets. Some sports clubs have budgets as high as $80,000 for the year. Almost all of UCF's 40 sports clubs are competitive and travel frequently. Last year 17 of the clubs competed at the national or regional level.
