Clay Newbill, UCF alumnus and veteran of reality television for 20 years, has been nominated for an Emmy in Outstanding Reality Program for ABC’s Shark Tank. The show was nominated for the same award in 2012, but did not receive an award. Shark Tank, which aired 26 episodes last season, has been renewed for a fifth season with at least 22 episodes.

Having graduated with degrees in film and radio/television, Newbill had early experience in production that led him to Disney’s MGM Studios, now called Hollywood Studios.

At the Emmys, which will be presented in September, Shark Tank will go up against TV powerhouses such as PBS’ Antiques Roadshow, Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, CBS’ Undercover Boss and Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch and MythBusters.

Newbill has been a staple in the reality television industry for several years. He was one of the pioneer members of the production team for the Real World series, as well as co-creator, producer and director for its sister series Road Rules.

Throughout his career, his name has been attached to many successful endeavors, and in 2000, after entering a deal with ABC, he acted as executive producer for top programs such as The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and The Benefactor among others. He has also branched out, working with other television companies such as ESPN, Bravo and Nickelodeon.

His relationship with Nickelodeon, and its hit show BrainSurge, which he produced, resulted in a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2012 for Best Game/Audience Participation Show as well as a Cynthia Cynopsis Kids Imagination Award for Kids Education Program.
