Thursday, IDEAS for UCF, Habitat for Humanity and Eco Coalition are teaming up to put on UCFs first Autumn Upcycled Fashion Show during National Recycling Week. The show will be held at Lake Claire from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Designers, models and even special appearances from Garbage Gone Glam and Platos Closet will be featured on the shows itinerary.

Upcycling is the process of taking useless or unwanted materials and turning them into something with equal or greater value than they originally had. The main difference from ordinary recycling is the way in which the recycled materials value changes.

The Upcycled Fashion Show will display clothing and other items made entirely from upcycled materials such as cardboard, plastic and other recyclables.

Platos Closet and Garbage Gone Glam were sought out by IDEAS for Arts, and representatives from the businesses said they are excited to be participating. They are sending their own models to feature designs during the show.

Platos Closet is a national company that buys and sells gently used name-brand clothing. It practices sustainability by encouraging people to sell their gently used clothes rather than just throwing them away. The fashion show is an opportunity for Platos Closet to promote its REcycle your STYLE motto. There is a Platos Closet located in Waterford Lakes and on Alafaya Trail in Oviedo.

Garbage Gone Glam is a fashion line that debuted in 2008 with a mission to raise awareness of environmental issues. It raises awareness through fashion shows and other events that feature upcycled designs. Garbage Gone Glam plans to tour across America in 2013.

Will Chorvat, co-president of IDEAS for UCF, said he believes this is an event students should definitely go see.

They are going to see so many things theyve never seen before. The materials they see or use everyday will be in a whole new light, Chorvat said.

IDEAS for UCF is putting on the show so artists have an outlet to express their talents while promoting sustainability at the same time. Chorvat hopes to achieve more than just showing off fashion.

I think the goal of this event is to change how people think about their trash and how to reuse certain materials to make inspiring and awesome things, he said.

Lauren Cantrell, the president of Habitat for Humanity at UCF, said she hopes this event will benefit the community and the Eco Coalition groups.

Its an innovative way to spread a message, and I also hope we can gain new members, Cantrell said.

Some examples of upcycled products that may be at the show are cardboard pants and purses made from candy bar wrappers.

Andrea Sarto, a micro & molecular biology major, is one of the many student designers for the show, although she claims to have no artistic talent.

I made an entire outfit out of cardboard and Chipotle paper bags. This shows my dedication to Chipotle, Sarto said. Im really proud of my outfit.

Sarto also discussed an elaborate outfit that included a corset top tied with hemp rope. There will be many other detailed designs, she said.

Chris Felton, a sophomore forensic science major, is looking forward to seeing the artistic, yet sustainable, products from designers.

I want to see peoples creative ideas and see what the sustainable community is doing. I expect to see very interesting things, Felton said.

Felton is a recycling advocate and also hopes to learn how to make some of the products featured in the fashion show.

It would be very helpful to learn how to make things myself, he said. I think it would be cool to see a book bag and even learn to make it.

The Upcycled Fashion Show will feature upbeat music from DJ Chill Will, and afterward, there will be free food as well as meet-and-greets with the models and designers.
