New semester and new editor-in-chief

The summer of 2010 is a big one.

The Study Union has you covered

We constantly hear students complaining about how they wish the library were open 24 hours a day during finals week.

Graduate degrees worth extra cost

If you are in line at the grocery store this week and find yourself flipping through magazines, then be sure to pick up the latest issue of U.S. News & World Report.

Canceled class is a good game plan

We are happy to see that UCF was able to execute the plan they put in motion years ago regarding football games scheduled at the same time as classes.

Take time to help victims

If you did not know, April is sexual assault awareness month. UCF Victim Services is partnering with Victim Service Center of Orange County Inc. and the Sexual Assault Treatment Center of Orange County — part of the VSC — and holding an underwear drive in an attempt to raise awareness about sexual assaults.

Life doesn't have to be a balancing act

I’ve been reading a lot lately about the importance of balancing your life. Actually that’s not true, I just read one article in Marie Claire about it, but I do know people are always talking about how important it is to keep our lives balanced.

Make effort to see potential provosts

On June 30, Terry Hickey will retire from his position as provost at UCF.
The final four candidates to replace Hickey will start their open meetings today. James Coleman’s meeting is today at 3:15 p.m. in Teaching Academy Room 117.

Equal benefits long overdue

UCF stands for opportunity” is the slogan your school promotes everywhere.
Commercials, posters and websites all attempt to convince people that your school is a diverse place where teachers and students can thrive. People from all walks of life have the chance to embrace the opportunities that only UCF can provide.

New leaders have promises to keep

As we say goodbye to a cabinet of the Student Government Association that was loved by many students, it is important to focus on the new student leaders of UCF.

Getting off the dreaded wait list

Earlier this week The New York Times published two articles covering college wait lists.

Perhaps you are thinking neither article would interest you because you are already in school, eliminating the fear of being put on a dreaded wait list.

All students need protection

Discrimination of any kind should not be tolerated, which is why the National Day of Silence rally this Friday is important.

Punishment should fit crime

Last week, UCF’s Golden Rule Review Committee voted on a new policy that would equalize the consequences of marijuana and alcohol use among students. The Future has supported this cause with endorsements in our paper since 2008.

Interns are not free employees

The history of journalism has almost always included internships — paid and unpaid. It’s an excellent way for a novice journalist to learn more about reporting and writing while proving to the editor that they could handle the pace of a newsroom.

Finals induce fear in study groups

The ticking is audible.

Yes, I think my eardrum has, once again, been replaced with a wind-up cymbal playing tin monkey. The clock is ticking — like the white rabbit’s — his pocket watch tucked just inside his waistcoat pocket, my white BlackBerry tucked just inside my brassiere. It’s not ticking down the days to my death, yet. I won’t be that morbid for a few more weeks. It’s currently the countdown to finals.

Administration to students: Sit down, shut up.

You may be attending a public university, but you probably wouldn’t realize it if you attempted to reach out to students on this campus. Even the most innocuous of activities, such as quietly offering a fellow student a flier, can be an illegal act from the perspective of SGA and the actual powers that be at UCF.

Expansion brings a good neighbor

It seems silly that the Carillon Home Owners Association is spending time and money to fight the student housing that might be built near their community.
Unless the residents of this area have been living in their homes since before 1963, then they should know what the future entailed: expansion. Assuming that UCF, a leading research university, would not grow as the years went by is naive.

Fix insurance before forcing it

Universities exist to provide an education for students. It is comforting to see UCF working diligently to aid in the lives of students outside of the classroom, but it is coming close to crossing the line. UCF is supporting a proposal that will make health insurance mandatory for all new, full-time students at Florida universities.

The old adage “the grass is always greener on the other side”  is so popular because it resonates with anyone, regardless of age, gender or nationality.
