UCF in mix to potentially host 2013 C-USA basketball championships
Despite the fact that the Knights will be leaving Conference USA for the Big East in the fall of 2013, there is still a chance UCF will host the 2013 C-USA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in the spring of 2013.
Memphis, which hosted the tournament this year and also will be leaving the league, and UCF were the only two schools to put in formal bids for the tournament.
The league will decide in June whether to decide between Memphis and UCF as host schools, or whether the league would like to open the search back up and encourage other schools to apply.
Godfrey enrolled in summer classes, will play wide receiver
Jeff Godfrey has enrolled in summer classes at UCF and will be returning to the team as a wide receiver this season.
Godfrey will be working to return to the good favor of his teammates as well as adjust to a new position. Godfrey was married recently, and in a recent interview with the Orlando Sentinel, head coach George O’Leary said he has noticed a change in his demeanor.
“I told him, ‘You have teammates that are disappointed in you,’” O’Leary said. “It’s not going to be easy coming back in. He’ll have to address the team. I told him, ‘You sort of left them.’ … But he seems to be a little more mature and understands life’s not that easy. You have to work.”
NCAA Regionals set to open on Thursday
The No. 22 UCF men’s golf team will begin play in the Stanford Regional in California on Thursday. It is the program’s sixth consecutive appearance. The Knights will be one of 13 teams trying to advance on from the three-day tournament.
UCF is hopeful to finish within the top five at the Stanford Regional, enabling the program to move on to the NCAA Championship, set for May 29-June 3 in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
“Regional play is simple. You play to win,” head coach Bryce Wallor said in a release. “That will take you to the NCAA Championship. That is our goal.”
Two recruits added to 2012 class
Incoming freshmen Dani Jenkins, from Valrico, and Kaci Thompson, from Round Rock, Texas, will be joining the UCF volleyball team this fall as the two newest members of the 2012 recruiting class.
“Dani is already capable to playing a back court role for us next fall, especially with her defensive tenacity. She is a very intense and high energy player,” head coach Todd Dagenais said. “I love that fact that Kaci is the starting libero on a team with loaded elite high level DI signees. … That kind of training and competition will go a long way in preparing her to immediately help our program be successful this fall.”
The two recruits will arrive on campus this summer and join a team that is returning six of seven starters from 2011.
