UCF (8-1-2) returned to action at FIU (4-5-3) with a 0-0 draw on Tuesday after having its match against South Carolina postponed Saturday due to inclement weather. The match at FIU was the first for the Knights since Oct. 1, giving the team a 10-day break from any games.
UCF totaled 14 shots in the match, two fewer than FIU's 16. Both goaltenders had six saves in the shortened game, which was stopped in the 84th minute because of unplayable field conditions caused by heavy rains.
Coach Bryan Cunningham mentioned inconsistency and missed opportunities when explaining the draw.
"We defended well at times and played well in spurts," Cunningham said in a release. "But we struggled in front of the goal. We had chances to put the game away, but we didn't do it. You have to give credit to FIU. Their goalkeeper was tremendous and made some point-blank saves that were first class. We will have to regroup and get ready to go on the road again Saturday at UAB."
UCF was not short on opportunities to take the lead. Senior Warren Creavalle recorded three shots on goal, one that could have put the Knights in the lead in the 77th minute.
FIU is a conference opponent for the Knights, making their conference record 2-0-1 and putting UCF in third place behind Marshall and South Carolina.
The Knights return to the field Saturday when they visit UAB at 8 p.m.
