Rock 'n' roll and razor blades — that's the theme behind the UCF area's newest barber shop.

Floyd's 99 Barber Shop, a "rock 'n' roll barbershop" as described by UCF-area location manager Staci Colter, opened its doors in the Plaza at University shopping center Sept. 2. It brings both a barbershop-salon fusion and some classic hits right near campus.

Boasting barbers as well as stylists, Floyd's can do it all, whether men are looking for a clean shave or ladies are looking for a drastic dye job.

The Central Florida area is already home to several other locations including shops in Longwood and in Winter Park.

With walls plastered with vintage rock 'n' roll posters and loud music thumping over the speakers, the atmosphere has made some clients loyal followers.

Hayden Lanham , a junior marketing and finance major, has been going to the Winter Park location for roughly a year and has tried every Floyd's location Orlando has to offer.

"Where else can you get a great cut and listen to Motörhead at the same time?" Lanham said. "I go to Floyd's because I can get a classic cut without the stuffy, old-school barbershop atmosphere. "

The killer atmosphere hasn't just kept returning clientele, it's brought in new customers as well.

"I've been looking for a good place to get a haircut [and] saw that it opened up at Plaza, so I was like what the [heck], I should try it," said Andres Hoyos, a junior biotechnology major with some pretty high standards when it comes to haircuts. "My scale is crappy, alright and amazing. If it's not amazing I either try a new barber or go to another place."

But after hearing about its rock 'n' roll vibe, Hoyos, who mostly looks for affordability and cleanliness in a shop, said it "sounds like a cool place to go."

But with so many locations in Orlando already, why did the shop pick UCF as its newest location?

"We chose this location actually just based on the demographic of the area," Colter said, citing the high population density in the area. "We thought that being in that atmosphere with that much opportunity with students was a great location and [an] opportunity [for] the company."

The shop also offers typical barber services as well as waxings and massages, in addition to old-school straight-razor face shaves.

To celebrate the grand opening, the shop will be offering half-off services to its first 2,000 customers. For a typical grand opening, Colter said, that offer typically lasts three to four weeks.
