A three-day weekend would normally mean sleeping till noon and spending the day in pajamas. But this upcoming Monday off from school comes with a call to action.

This Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the UCF area is bursting with events to honor the man who played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement. The Central Florida Future has put together a few ways students can turn their potential lazy Monday into one filled with remembrance:

Volunteer UCF Service Park Cleanup
When: 8 a.m.
Where: Barker Park; transportation provided in front of the CFE Arena
Cost: Free
The Buzz: Volunteer UCF is teaming up with Orlando's MLK Day of Service to beautify the city's George Barker Park. Students will help with planting trees and recycling. VUCF expects more than 100 students to participate, and those interested can sign up through KnightConnect. Lunch will also be provided. "MLK Day of Service gives students the opportunity to give back to the community while honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," said VUCF Civic Engagement Director Annabelle Gonzales. "My goal is to make our day off from classes a day to impact our community."

Parramore Clean-Up Service Project
When: 9 a.m.
Where: Meet at Florida A&M University College of Law, 201 Beggs Ave., Downtown Orlando
Cost: Free
The Buzz: Still in need of volunteers, this clean-up will directly benefit the Parramore neighborhood. Students will be painting houses and schools, planting greenery and improving playgrounds. For more information, contact Patricia Broussard at 703-861-1131 or patricia.broussard@famu.edu.

MLK South Street Jazz & Blues Cookout
When: 10 a.m.
Where: John H. Jackson Community Center, 1002 Carter St, Orlando
Cost: Free
The Buzz: In between service projects, live music and delicious finger-lickin' barbecue can serve as a nice pick me up, as well as a festive way to remember Dr. King and the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. MLK Day Parade & Family Fun Day
When:
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Where: Starts at Oviedo High School and ends at Round Lake Park
Cost: Free
The Buzz: Just minutes away from UCF's main campus, the city of Oviedo celebrates the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. through family-friendly games, live entertainment and, of course, plenty of food. For more information, call 407-971-5568.

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Vigil
When: Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; vigil begins at 6 p.m.
Where: Rollins College at Bush Auditorium, 1000 Holt Ave., Winter Park
Cost: Free
The Buzz: With keynote speaker Chelo Fansua and performances by The Center for Contemporary Dance and music from Rollins alumna Maria Bryant, Rollins College's annual vigil remembers the impact of Dr. King. For more information, contact Zakiya Brown at zbrown@rollins.edu.
