Now that the spring semester is in full swing, it's time to figure out a good way to get rid of that extra holiday weight. Getting back in shape is a pretty common New Year's resolution, but where do you start?

If you're really interested in trimming down, building up or just staying in shape, here are some tips that might be helpful:

Have a buddy: If you want someone to have your back, push you to your limits or just talk to you while you workout, try bringing a friend.

"Go to group exercise classes or to the gym with friends, but be committed," said Vanessa Nguyen, a spinning instructor at the Recreation and Wellness Center.

Apart from teaching her own class, Nguyen likes to participate in other classes and encourages her friends to go with her.

There are exercise classes hosted by the RWC every day of the week, with several options to choose from. To check out or sign up for classes, information can be found on the RWC's website.

Make a schedule and have goals: Between classes, work and extra-curricular activities, setting time aside for the gym might not be the easiest. But a schedule might be the motivation you need.

"I make myself a detailed schedule with study and workout times and I always stick to it, so I make my grades and health equal priorities," said Madison Wilson, a freshman social work major.

For those who like writing things down to keep track of them, try a journal or even a wellness journal from Moleskin, which is tailor made to track both your mental and physical health.

Portion control: "There is no easy and/or quick eating plan that I can recommend other than getting back to portion sizes and limiting or watching high-calorie foods," said Preeti Wilkhu, a registered dietitian at UCF Health Services.

Wilkhu suggests eating mindfully and preplanning weekly means and grocery lists.

Many grocery stores have apps that allow you to make shopping lists if you're the kind of person that will forget your paper list on the kitchen counter. For some easy at-home recipes, or even full-fledged grocery lists, check out some foodie websites or Pinterest.

Monday to Thursday: 6 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Friday: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Saturday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Sunday: 11 a.m. to 12 a.m.
