Elements of Hip Hop UCF will host its third annual Battle Knights event Friday in the education complex gym.
The free event is a hip-hop dance competition featuring three-person crews and one-on-one battles, where the winners receive a VIP ticket to Red Bull North American Nationals. With the event coming up on its third year, president and junior environmental studies major Hae-Yuan Chang wants to focus on reaching out to students and showing them the hip-hop scene of Orlando.
"We want people to be inspired by dancers who are accomplished and who are from all over Florida and not be intimidated by it because everybody started somewhere," Chang said.
The Audio Engineering Club at UCF will be supplying the equipment for the event to assure that the music will really fill out the education complex gym. Dylan Weitzman, a junior physics major and the head of the club, is excited to bring the noise to Battle Knights.
"We have two 12-inch midrange speakers and an 18-inch subwoofer, so the place should be kicking," Weitzman said.
Elements of Hip Hop UCF has only been a registered student organization for two years and is just starting to get its footing. Chang wants the organization to bridge the gap between students and the community and prove that anyone can dance or learn how to freestyle.
"It's just like a big family and we want people to have a creative outlet and to just be supported by everyone in the club," Chang said.
A partial proceeds event will be held the day of Battle Knights at Burger U from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., which will help support the club. There will be shuttles during Battle Knights that can take students to Burger U and back so they can grab a bite and return.
Battle Knights III is open to all and will be free to attend, taking place on Friday between 7 p.m. and midnight.
