Just north of UCF, the cities of Oviedo and Winter Springs have been named two of the safest areas in the state.
Home to popular student housing such as Northgate Lakes, Riverwind at Alafaya and NorthView, the city of Oviedo touches the northern edge of campus. Winter Springs, which is predominately single-family homes, is just northwest of campus.
In a list released by Safe Choice Security, a home security news blog, Winter Springs was ranked the No. 3 safest city in the state, while Oviedo trailed at No. 9 safest. The list was based off of FBI statistics and crime rates throughout the state, including both property and violent crimes.
Winter Springs has 1.38 violent crimes per 1,000 people and was described as "easily the safest city in Central Florida," in the report.
"The city goes above and beyond to care for its citizens with an emergency email notification system for all types of hazard," the report states.
Oviedo has a rate of 2.24 violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
"… A variety of programs in place to encourage citizen involvement in keeping the city safe helps to keep Oviedo one of the safest places in Florida," the report states.
Nearby Lake Mary also made the list at No. 18.
