UCF students are planning a candlelight vigil set for 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the Reflecting Pond.

The event is being set up by the UCF chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and The Gauntlet.

A video surfaced on Tuesday that showed what appeared to be Steven Joel Sotloff being beheaded in the Middle East by the Islamic State. He previously had appeared in a video on Aug. 20 in which American journalist James Foley was beheaded.

Sotloff attended UCF from 2002 until 2004, and was a pending journalism major. He was a freelance journalist in the Middle East before he was taken hostage a year ago.

He worked as a senior staff writer for the Central Florida Future while at UCF and covered breaking news, international issues and the 2004 presidential election.
