UCF will be awarded an "Oscar of Invention" by R&D Magazine for developing one of the top 100 inventions of the year.
UCF researchers at the Florida Solar Energy Center began work on the breakthrough technology being honored — a color-changing tape to visually detect hydrogen leaks — under a grant from NASA's Glenn Research Center, according to the Orlando Business Journal.
NASA's Kennedy Space Center and HySense Technology will also be honored this year. Past winners of the R&D 100 award include the inventors of the fax machine and HDTV.
R&D Magazine, a publication of Advantage Business Media, has served research scientists, engineers and technical staff at laboratories around the world.
