A free dinner banquet to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS will be held Friday in the Student Union's Pegasus Ballroom at 7 p.m.

The Multicultural Student Center and fraternity Lambda Sigma Upsilon are hosting the 6th annual banquet in an effort to educate the UCF community about the disease.

Tsciena White, MSC student director, said that people may be uncomfortable to talk about HIV/AIDS, and that the goal of the event is to encourage people to be more open to learning about it.

"I think it's important for students to go so they can learn and be educated about [HIV/AIDS]," White said. "It's something we should openly talk about and students be educated on."

According to the Center for Disease Control, about 50,000 people in the United States become infected with HIV each year.

Orlando-based YouTube sensation Tré Melvin will be a speaker at the banquet, as well as representatives Michael Freeman and Gabriel Martinez from UCF's Wellness & Health Promotion Services. UCF dance groups Latin Rhythms and Cultural Conduct will perform dance numbers throughout the banquet.
