60 tons of snow to create icy oasis near UCF Saturday
For students sticking around this weekend, a host of holiday events will take place in nearby Oviedo as the countdown to Christmas continues to tick onward.
On Saturday, the city of Oviedo, located just north of UCF, will celebrate the season with its annual Holiday Parade, followed by an icy treat it calls "Snow Mountain." The parade will begin at 4 p.m. and runs from State Road 417 and Oviedo Mall Boulevard, around the mall and through to Dovera Drive. Visitors can park in the mall parking lots and can view the parade from the shoulders of the road. However, spectators are asked not to set up a viewing spot in the medians.
Following the parade, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the city will host its annual tradition, Snow Mountain. Despite temperatures only sitting around the 50s and 60s come Saturday, the city will transform part of the Oviedo Mall parking lot into a snowy oasis, clad with frozen hills for sledding and sliding. Nearly 60 tons of snow are carted into the area for the event, and visitors can make snow angels, concoct snowmen or just enjoy a piece of winter wonderland Florida residents rarely experience. There will also be a zip line attraction for guests ready to soar above the spectacle.
The parade is free, but there is an admission cost to the Snow Mountain event. Tickets into the snow and inflatable games cost $5 prior to the event or $10 at the gate. Zip line tickets cost $5 prior to the event as well, or $7 at the gate. Advance tickets can be purchased in advance at the Oviedo Aquatic Center, located at 148 Oviedo Blvd., or Riverside Park, located at 1600 Lockwood Blvd.
