Football games, Homecoming and Thanksgiving break are not the only things that set fall semester apart from the spring.

UCF has seen a decline in enrollment rates from fall to spring semesters since 1968, according to the Office of Institutional Management Enrollment and Graduation Historical Headcount Enrollment.

Fall 2014 saw a total enrollment of 60,810 students. Those numbers broken down translate into 52,532 undergrad students, 7,858 grad students and 420 medical students.

Spring 2014 is showing a total number of 58,741 — a 2,000-student decline — with 50,728 undergrad students, 7,593 grad students and 420 medical students. These numbers are preliminary and subject to change based off final numbers, said Esther Pennepacker, administrative assistant for the Office of Institutional Management.

The largest decrease comes from the population of undergrad students. While the total count for admissions has decreased from fall to spring for the last few decades, there's speculation as to why this is occurring.

Senior education major Lindsay Garry is one of the 1,804 students who did not re-enroll for classes after the fall semester. But not for the reasons you may think. Garry experienced scheduling issues with her final courses for graduation, leaving her optionless to enroll in education classes for the spring semester.

"The one class I had to get into was full, and it's only offered in the spring term. I couldn't be given an override and now I have to wait until next spring to take any subsequent courses," she said.

Linda Sullivan, executive director for the Office of Institutional Management, has her own thoughts on the subject.

"This is simply a guess, but possibly new high school grads will complete their first semester and then not return back," Sullivan said.

The last time the count for total enrollment stayed the same between fall and spring semester was 1993.
