I-4 construction project begins today
The $2.3 billion six-year project that will add four toll lanes to a 21-mile stretch of I-4 began at 12:01 a.m. today.
Initial work includes placing mile markers and plastic barriers along the auxiliary shoulder lanes in which most of the construction will occur. In late February or early March, a series of low-slung concrete divider walls will be installed to protect workers from traffic, according to The Orlando Sentinel.
No lane closures or traffic advisories have been announced.
The construction will span an area from Kirkman Road to State Road 434. It will raise the speed limit to 60 mph, add two new pedestrian crossings at Maitland Blvd. and State Road 436, and add over 60 new bridges throughout the corridor, according to construction plans at metroplanorlando.com.
Construction is scheduled to end March 2021.
