'All clear' at UCF Student Union after bomb threat
UPDATE (3 a.m.): The UCF Student Union has been cleared by law enforcement and students are being let back into the building, UCF spokesman Chad Binette confirmed.
UPDATE (2:53 a.m.): Nothing was found inside the Student Union, UCF spokesman Chad Binette said. The person who made the threat had stated the bomb would go off in two hours, thus law enforcement had to wait before it could sweep the building. Law enforcement is waiting for the Orange County Sheriff's Office helicopter to search the outside of the Student Union before an "all clear" can be given.
UPDATE (2:15 a.m.): Officers and K-9 have started sweeping the Student Union, UCF PD tweeted.
UPDATE (1:54 a.m.): A small part of Gemini Boulevard is closed near the School of Performing Arts.
UPDATE (1:38 a.m.): The Student Union is the only building evacuated and local law enforcement continues to sweep the UCF Student Union in response to an anonymous bomb threat.
"It was a call that went into the Orlando Police Department from an individual stating that there was a bomb in the Student Union," UCF spokesman Chad Binette said. "The first thing was the police went to evacuate the building and this happened right before the Student Union was supposed to close, so it wasn't very busy."
The K-9 unit was also on scene searching the area. Police first responded to the Student Union at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday.
"Clearly we want to act in the safety of our entire campus community," Binette said. "Evacuating was our first priority."
UPDATE (12:35 a.m.): The Orange County Bomb Squad is on the way to sweep the Student Union, said UCF PD Public Information Officer Courtney Gilmartin said.
A bomb threat was made to the Student Union, according to a UCF Alert issued late Saturday. The threat was made anonymously to the Orlando Police Department.
UCF Police are evacuating and ask that students steer clear of the area.
The alert was issued at 11:48 p.m. by UCF Emergency Management.
Stenza Daniels, a senior health sciences major, said she was in the Student Union at the time of the bomb threat. She was doing makeup for Club Creol's pageant when the Student Union was evacuated.
"I don't think anyone was really scared. I think it was more so people were annoyed and irritated at the fact that it was a pageant going on and so much left to do," Daniels said.
UCF PD tweeted that the Student Union is completely evacuated.
This is a breaking news story, stay tuned for updates.
