Just as the honored armed forces have served for our safety, the UCF Police Department is joining agencies across the country to do the same.

Memorial Day weekend is here, and UCF PD is stepping up to ensure safety on campus by participating in a "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

"The campaign is tied with Memorial Day weekend and the subsequent summer travel season, when more activity on the roads means greater risk," according to a press release.

Officers will be looking for unbuckled motorists, and seat belt violators will be subject to a $114 non-moving violation.

Courtney Gilmartin, UCF PD public information officer, said UCF PD issued eight seat belt citations on Monday and Tuesday.

The campaign goes through the end of the month, and Gilmartin said officers will still be looking for seat belt violations after the Memorial Day holiday.

"We know that Memorial Day is a popular travel holiday that kicks off the summer season, so it's certainly a good opportunity to push the message," she said.

Nearly 63,000 lives have been saved by seat belts from 2009 to 2013, and accident injury rates are declining, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

UCF PD hopes that through targeted enforcement, drivers are encouraged to make buckling up a habit, the release states.
