The Recreation and Wellness Center collaborated with World's Largest Swimming Lesson Thursday in an attempt to break the world record for the largest swimming lesson.

The goal of the event was to raise awareness for prevention of childhood drowning by emphasizing the importance of teaching children how to swim.

WLSL has set the record for the world's largest swimming lesson for five consecutive years. Last year, more than 36,000 people participated across more than 400 locations in 22 countries. This year, an estimated 40,000 individuals in 900 locations from across the globe took part in the event, according to a press release.

Guinness World Records will be counting and certifying an official number over the next few weeks.

The WLSL hosted lessons for students at the RWC lap pool and a separate lesson for children at the RWC leisure pool.

Katie Serrano, a junior criminal justice major, attended the lesson and heard about it through an email. She said that she knew some swimming basics, but decided to attend to both improve her swimming capabilities and to take part in breaking a world record.

"I heard about the lesson at the gym, and I saw the poster and then my friend signed me up," said Shanique Scott, a junior business management major.

UCF has been involved in a number of world-record breaking attempts in the past. In 2013, students of 4EVER KNIGHTS, UCF's official student alumni association, broke the record for the most contributions to a greeting card. The card for the event celebrated UCF's 50th birthday and received 6,352 signatures beating the previous record of 5,339.

In 2014, UCF's Gaming Knights club attempted the record for the longest video game marathon playing a fighting game. According to Guinness World Records, the 48-hour record was set March 6, 2012 and has not been broken.

Earlier this year, UCF attempted the record for the world's largest high-five chain, but fell short. The current Guinness World Record for the longest high-five chain is 1,647 set by Indiana State University.
