UCF College Democrats to hold vigil for Oregon victims
A vigil will be held at UCF to honor the victims of a shooting that occurred Thursday at Umpqua Community College in southern Oregon, killing 10 people and injuring seven, as reported by USA Today.
College Democrats at UCF, along with other student activists and organizations, will host the vigil Monday starting at 7 p.m. at the Reflecting Pond.
"The UCF College Democrats have been very vocal about our opposition to the bill passing through the state legislature that will allow concealed carry on college campuses in Florida," College Democrats President Nikki Mariutto said. "This tragic event that happened in Oregon shows how detrimental this bill could be if passed."
Mariutto said she is in the scheduling stages with the speakers who will appear at the event, but she's planning on having students speak, along with representatives from the UCF Police Department and the Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus.
"As students, we need to stand up to our legislatures to help keep our campus safe. We need to stand up for those who passed away in the shooting to honor their lives and make sure something like this does not happen again," Mariutto said.
