A 20-year-old UCF student died in a head-on collision on State Road 407, about a mile west of I-95, around 12:30 a.m. Saturday.

UCF Police spokeswoman Courtney Gilmartin confirmed that Keri DeMott of Orlando, was a sociology major in her third semester at UCF.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, a 2004 Honda Pilot driven by 22-year-old Keith Pumphrey of Melbourne was heading eastbound on S.R. 407 in Brevard County when, for an unknown reason, he swerved into the westbound lanes where DeMott was. The front of Pumphrey’s vehicle struck the front of DeMott’s 2001 Honda CRV, according to the FHP release.

Pumphrey was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in critical condition, while DeMott was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, and it is unknown if the accident was alcohol-related, the release states.

Pumphrey was not a UCF student, Gilmartin said.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.

FHP Public Affairs Officer Kim Montes said the University of North Florida contacted her Saturday and claimed that DeMott was a student there, but this is not confirmed.
