Students are raising roofs to raise money for Habitat for Humanity at UCF.

The UCF campus chapter is holding its annual Shack-a-Thon event from March 16 - 18 at Memory Mall. The event brings organizations together in teams to each build a shack with predetermined tools and supplies donated by Lowe's.

Teams each used 10 sheets of plywood and 10 two-by-fours, though the team that raised the most money prior to the event earned 12 of each. Groups built their shacks from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday.

"Basically, we give them all a pound and a half of nails and tell them to have at it between 12 to 8," said Michael Davies, marketing senior and Shack-a-Thon director.

On day two, participants were on hand to encourage passersby to vote for their favorite shack.

Anyone can vote, and the winner will be announced on Tuesday, March 18.

"I think they all have their perks, and it's really going to come down to the wire," Davies said.

Two competitions have closed, including most motivated and most money raised. The Rock Climbing Club won both, Davies said, as the student group fundraised with a "Swag Hole Tournament" -- a miniature corn-hole competition.

In the end, Habitat for Humanity comes out a winner. So far, students have raised $3,300 and have a goal to raise $5,000 by the end of the event.

"I think it's really cool because [the event is] different, and things that are different catch people's attention and make more money," said Kayla Pitoniak, a forensic science sophomore who helped build the Honors Congress shack.

Shack-a-Thon 2014 participants include:

  • Rock Climbing Club
  • College Democrats
  • Honors Congress
  • Phi Delta Theta
  • I.D.E.A.S
  • UCF Quidditch
