Several reports of burglaries less than 5 miles from UCF's campus have police on the lookout for gangs of juveniles roving residential neighborhoods.

Searches involving helicopters and K-9 units from the Oviedo Police Department and Seminole County Sheriff's Office occurred at 4:15 a.m. Friday after a caller in a housing development northeast of campus reported a group of eight juveniles attempting to break into parked vehicles, according to a news release from the Oviedo Police Department.

One resident reported hearing a strange noise in her home before discovering the back sliding door was open and her two vehicles had been ransacked for valuables. She reported seeing four individuals beating a quick escape through the garage door.

Police searched the 1000 block of West Riviera Boulevard, 1000 block of Trout Creek Court, 1000 block of Butler Creek Court, 1000 block of Kelly Creek Court and the 1700 block of Tealbriar Avenue, but no suspects were apprehended. However, searches yielded the discovery of two vehicles stolen out of Orange County, one of which contained property stolen from one of the burglarized homes.

Reports indicate that a total of three residences and eight vehicles were burglarized overnight.

Earlier this year, Oviedo Police started "Operation Safeguard," visiting every home in Oviedo in an effort to reduce auto burglaries in the city. Police continue to remind citizens to keep their cars locked and valuables out of sight.

Police advise anyone with information regarding these crimes to contact Oviedo detectives at 407-971-5700 or CRIMELINE at 1-800-423-8477.
