In a back-and-forth contest, UCF (12-18) dropped its opening-round game in the American Athletic Conference Tournament to ECU (14-18) in overtime 81-80.
Despite big games from B.J. Taylor, who scored 22 points, and a double-double from Justin McBride, UCF struggled to consistently stop the Pirates. McBride had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and freshman Adonys Henriquez added 17 points.
UCF out-rebounded the Pirates, as well as shot a higher percentage from the field. However, the Knights were doomed in part because of their 13 turnovers.
At the end of regulation, senior forward Kasey Wilson converted a layup to tie the game and force overtime. On the final possession of overtime, Wilson fired a long jumper that hit the back of the rim and ended the game.
UCF ended the season 0-3 against the Pirates, who now advance to play top-seeded SMU Friday at noon.
