Former UCF star running back and current part-time employee with UCF Athletics Kevin Smith was arrested on campus Wednesday in connection with a motor vehicle crash that occurred Saturday, according to an arrest affidavit.
The affidavit states the accident occurred at a stop sign on Mensa Lane at Garage E. Smith allegedly backed his vehicle into another.
According to the affidavit, Smith "intimidated" the owner of the other car and told him that Smith would take care of the issue. After providing his name and phone number, Smith left.
At 10 a.m. Wednesday, UCF police officer James Strawn went to the Harris Corporation Engineering Center and made contact with Smith in a hallway.
"I explained that I was investigating the crash he was involved in. He stated that there was no crash. I reiterated that there was a crash and that I had several citations to issue to him," Strawn said in the affidavit. "He stated that I couldn't be investigating a crash or giving him citations because there was no crash."
The officer said he told Smith that he needed to sign the citation and Smith said he would not sign it. When Strawn tried to give Smith a second citation, this one for driving on a suspended driver's license, the affidavit states Smith walked away. He was then arrested for resisting/obstructing an officer without violence.
"My investigation revealed that Mr. Smith had, in addition to the infraction of improperly backing, committed two criminal violations: driving while license suspended and leaving the scene of an accident without providing information," Strawn said in the affidavit.
An incident report states that Strawn did not record the incident.
Smith is one of the most successful players in UCF football history and currently is the all-time leading rusher. He rejoined the athletics program in 2014 as a part-time employee, and is taking undergraduate classes at the school.
A UCF Athletics spokesman said that they are aware of the incident.
