UCF's softball team can add another impressive mark to its resume for the 2014-15 season. Junior pitcher Shelby Turnier was named as one of 26 finalists for the 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.
Turnier became the first Knight to be named a finalist. She also became the first Knight to be named the USA Softball National Collegiate Pitcher of the Week.
"It's such an honor to be recognized with these awards, but I have to share the credit," Turnier said in a release. "I think it really shows how bad we want to win and how far we're willing to go in order to reach our goals this season."
Turnier's pitching has helped the Knights to a 36-6 record. Her 0.72 earned run average and eight shutouts lead the nation. She is fifth in the country in strikeouts with 211 and has allowed just 3.20 hits per seven innings, which is third in the nation.
That has been a big reason for her earning three consecutive American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week awards.
"Shelby has been so solid for us all season," UCF head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said in a release. "The recognition she's receiving is well-deserved."
