On July 14, UCF Athletics had a case of bracket fever and decided to create a head-to-head, single elimination bracket of the top 16 UCF football plays in the past 10 years. The Cardiac Knights contest took to social media to let fans vote through Facebook on what they dubbed the “Sweet Sixteen of UCF football.”
The first matchup featured J.J. Worton’s “The Catch,” which was a one-handed touchdown grab to tie the game at 36 with 1:06 left in the fourth quarter against Temple. It was a SportsCenter top-10 play and won the Best Catch Award at the ESPN Sport Science Newton Awards in honor of Sir Isaac Newton on Feb. 16 2014.
Worton’s catch was declared the winner of the bracket on July 30 as it topped Jeff Godfrey’s “Game-winning TD versus Louisville.”
Godfrey’s catch gave the Knights a 38-35 victory over No. 6 Louisville in a Friday night feature on ESPN. The victory also marked the highest-ranked opponent UCF had ever defeated.
The bracket also featured the most recent nomination: Breshad Perriman’s “#HailPerriman.” Fans may remember the catch as the nearly 60-yard pass that gave UCF its second consecutive American Athletic Conference Championship title with a touchdown over East Carolina with no time remaining on the clock.
Among others were numerous big hits, game winning touchdowns and interceptions.
UCF football begins preseason practices on Aug. 5 and its first game is Sept. 3 against FIU at home.
