George O'Leary announced on Tuesday that junior running back William Stanback was released from the Knights football team

“William Stanback’s been dismissed from the football team for failure to comply with rules of the athletic policy and team,” O'Leary said. “He’s been removed from scholarship.”

Stanback led the Knights in the backfield last season with 697 yards on 189 carries and was second behind Storm Johnson during his true freshman campaign in 2013. He lost the starting job to junior Dontravious Wilson to begin the 2015 season.

Stanback appeared in two games for the Knights this season, rushing 12 times for 17 yards.

When Wilson was injured in the first half of the season opener, Stanback filled in the backfield but netted just 6 yards on 10 carries.

True freshman Taj McGowan took over against Stanford, rushing 20 times for 70 yards. McGowan and redshirt freshman C.J. Jones shared time in the backfield during the team’s 16-15 loss to Furman. Stanback did not appear in that game.
