Junior right-handed pitcher Robby Howell was named the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week for his strong performance against Rice on Monday, as he threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings in the shutout victory.
Howell is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in the 2015-16 season in which he has thrown 19 scoreless innings, striking out 13, walking four and allowing only 10 hits. His opponents' batting average is a low .156, showing an impressive start to the season from the mound.
"I wanted to come out and give us a good start," Howell said after the game against Rice. "We played good defensively and [Brennan] Bozeman made a phenomenal play at short. It was a good team win."
With a great defense behind him, plays being made both in the infield and in the outfield, Howell and the rest of the pitching staff have had an easier ride over the last couple of weeks.
Howell is the first pitcher to be given the honor since March 24, 2014, when Eric Skoglund was named AAC Pitcher of the Week.
Howell and the Knights return home for a three-game series against LIU Brooklyn. They will take on the Blackbirds at 6:30 p.m. on Friday for the first of three games taking place over the course of the weekend at Jay Bergman Field.
