After a tiring 10 innings, senior catcher Samantha McCloskey smashed a home run, sending the ball out of the park and sealing the deal on UCF’s 10th straight victory on Tuesday night against Illinois State University.

McCloskey credited her success to her ability to stay calm and focused in the 1-0 victory.

“I have been thinking about my cat going up to bat and just relaxing.”

After nine and a half innings of a 0-0 score, McCloskey’s philosophy paid off as she sent a ball over the left-field fence.

Defense was a big aspect of this game as well though, as redshirt junior centerfielder Jasmine Acevedo stayed on her toes with two huge plays in the top of the tenth inning, preventing Illinois State from getting on base.

The second game of their double-header this Tuesday night showed senior pitcher Shelby Turnier’s tough side as well.

“It felt good to be able to come out and pitch like that. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a really strong outing against a good team,” Turnier said. “My team did awesome.”

This game was definitely not easy for Turnier but she put her best pitches forward, only walking four batters and giving up six hits overall.

“I felt like I actually got stronger throughout the game,” Turnier said.

The Knights will face Ball State on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to continue their play at home.
