Senior pitcher Shelby Turnier is now at the top of UCF’s record books for most wins in a season.
The Palm Beach Gardens native claimed the record with a victory over UConn in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championships — her 79th victory.
Turnier continued her stellar play against UConn, when she pitched seven innings, struck out 13 batters and allowed only three hits.
“Shelby did a fantastic job today on the mound," softball head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said in a release. “Looking at her being able to take the No.1 spot for UCF with most wins [in a season], doing it 13 strikeouts and winning first round of the tournament. You couldn’t of asked for a better scenario for her to win that award.”
Turnier herself did not realize that she broke the record after the contest.
“It feels awesome,” Turnier said in a video posted to ucfknights.com. “It's awesome to have that record, put my name in the books like that my senior year. I'm just glad that we came out with another win today and we're moving further into the postseason."
UCF (36-19) is ranked No. 25 in the nation and will face off against Tulsa on Friday the 13th at 4:30 p.m. in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for semifinals of the American Athletic Conference Championships.
The Knights swept Tulsa in their regular season series this season and have momentum on their side after a 3-2 victory over UConn.
“At this point this is expected of us,” Turnier said in the video. "Everyone is expecting that we’re gonna end up in the championship game and that’s exactly what we’re playing for.
