KGB

Text a question to 542542 and Ryan Jones, a senior electrical engineering major at UCF, may be the one to answer it on the other end.

Jones is an agent for KGB, the world's largest independent provider of directory assistance and enhanced information services based in New York, according to the KGB Web site.

"I'm the kind of person who knows a little about a lot of things," Jones said.

Jones took the job answering questions sent to him via text messages because he was looking to earn some extra cash. He said the job offers an incredibly flexible schedule and no boss watching over his every move.

"It's weird and bizarre. At almost every job you meet someone, but at KGB it is possible to never come in contact with someone else except in writing," Jones said.

The agents across the country are given the questions at random depending on who is working at any given time. The same agent who answered the initial question may not answer a follow-up question.

"When we are on our mobile phones, we're doing things, we're busy. If we have a quick question, we'd like a quick and accurate answer," said Bruce Stewart, the CEO of KGB, to the Orlando Sentinel in an article published on Sept. 4.

Jones has seen the good, the bad and the ugly as far as questions go. He deems himself "the finder of the curious" and answers questions ranging from movie times in a specific area to riddles and math puzzles. Jones said he must answer and provide credible Internet sources to back up the information in order to make every person's 99 cents-per-question worth the money.

"From my point of view, he sits on his computer all day doing nothing even though I know in reality he's definitely hard at work," said Jones' girlfriend, Monica Branom, a junior medical laboratory science major. "He gets to look up random things online for work, but it seems like it's fun, too."

Jones said his good memory and pleasure in reading and learning information is what motivates him to answer questions most commonly about homework, song lyrics and cheat codes for video games.

"Ryan is really perfect for this job. He constantly has random facts about all different subjects. He's always willing to help other people understand new things or help someone with homework so, I think he really likes being able to help people all over the country answer questions that are important to them," Branom said.

This is kool. I mean I went to high school with Ryan it's good to know I may be talking to him to get answers I need since I do already know him.

I am also a KGB agent. While I agree that you can't make a lot of money per hour ($2.00 - $4.00), it isn't very hard, and it doesn't even take up all of your mental capacity. For example, I do it while watcing TV, listening to the radio, etc. The money adds up fairly quickly, and perhaps could be saved for a vacation or Christmas.

I worked at ChaCha (242-242) last year to get some extra money. They are free to use and I made about $2,000 last year. But, since it all depends on demand hourly income changes. One time I made 40 bucks in one night...other times I am struggling for 4 dollars an hour. But, back when I started in early 2008 it was a gold mine. As more "guides" came around things started slimming out. A lot of questions are from 14 year old perverts. It is cool that others have enjoyed this type of job too. A lot of things I have looked up have taught me a lot about random stuff.

I'm an electrical engineer too, and I'm also a KGB agent! Great to see there are others like me on the other end! The pay is quite bad, but once you gain experience, you are able to get 9-10 dollars an hour, so it begins to add up. But if you think about it... it's still extra cash regardless!!! Especially if you are a couch potato! Why not get in a few laughs in between commercials by answering questions?!??!

I disagree, the pay is great. I make about 10-15 dollars an hour, and I can work at home while relaxing.

Ha, i'm a mechanical engineering major in minnesota and basically fit the description of Ryan. I'm also a KGB agent, but Jay is right when he says the pay is horrible. I'm probably going to get deactivated soon because its just not enough of an incentive when you make about 2 bucks an hour on average...

If the pay wasn't horrible it'd be the ideal job. I dabble as an agent myself. If you're at all uncomfortable about sexual questions, don't waste your time applying. Roughly 10% of them are of that nature.

I work for kgb and it is awesome. I can't believe an electrical engineering major like Ryan is answering questions just like me. Great article and thanks for the info. ;D
