UCF football on the verge of greatness

Now is the time.

There's still plenty of room.

Jump on the UCF football bandwagon while you still can.

For the casual fan, for those whom have been on the fence, or for those of whom have popped in and out of fandom on whether to invest themselves in the Knights, now is the time.

These words aren't meant to call or single out fans. Think of it more as a rallying of troops to bring more support.

These are exciting times, during the formative years of the program, to be a UCF football fan. Success is on the horizon for this team. It's so close you can see it, taste it and feel it.

The Knights have even gotten a glimpse of it by making their third bowl game in the last five years under George O'Leary — the program's first appearances in college football's bowl season.

The Knights may be winless in bowl games and may have suffered a disappointing 45-24 loss to Rutgers in the St. Petersburg Bowl, but just a day later, UCF got word of its most significant recruiting news ever, all but washing away any displeasure of how the season ended.

The dubbed "Miami-trio" of quarterback Jeffery Godfrey, wide receiver Joshua Reese and cornerback Jammal McClain from Miami Central High School all committed to UCF the next day, despite rumors that the three were headed to USF.

Godfrey, who threw for 2,748 yards and 36 touchdowns his senior year,  is 3-star recruit, but was a four at one point, and is rated the 8th best dual-threat quarterback in the country while Reese is a 4-star, and McClain is a solid prospect.

Godfrey will enroll early at UCF to compete in spring practice for the starting job, which is one of the main reasons he chose UCF because it offered the opportunity of early playing time.

He also has lofty goals and eyes a championship for UCF,  but not a just a conference championship, a national championship.

"My goal is to get UCF to the national championship," Godfrey said in an interview with UCFsports.com. "That's what I want to do, and that's my goal. I want to come in and make a great impact for myself and the UCF team."

Over the past five seasons, UCF's recruiting classes have continued to include more highly regarded recruits each year, and this year was no different. UCF is on the cusp of developing something to be proud of, but it's just going to take some time. Just be patient and hang in there UCF fans. It will happen.

A football program has got to start somewhere and to use a perfect cliché: Rome wasn't built in a day and well neither can football programs.

UCF's in-state recruiting rivals weren't always at the top either.

Just think, UF wasn't always what it is now. Heck, even 34 years ago, when Bobby Bowden, one of  college football's greatest coaches of all-time, stepped foot in Tallahassee, the Seminoles weren't what they are now.

But amidst all of the heat and negativity from the media and fans, what O'Leary and his staff have done is lay a foundation for building a successful program.

Whether UCF develops into a powerhouse remains to be seen but given the recent success and that UCF is in the talent-rich state of Florida that has a boat-load of recruiting potential, good times appear ahead for UCF fans.

Which is why now is the time to be a true fan, when everything isn't quite there yet as UCF football seeks its identity.

True fan-hood is tested during these times, during the highs and lows and the struggles a program or sports organization goes through before it becomes consistently successful.

The UCF fans that have hung in there should be applauded for sticking around when it would be very easy to jump ship to the successes of UF and even USF.

And when all is said and done, the winning will be even sweeter when everything comes together.

OmniKnight, take off the blinders and see the truth. O'Leary has been here for 7 years and has accomplished nothing!!!! I remember the days when we took major teams such as Georgia, Nebraska, and Alabama to the last play. Criticizing me will not change the facts. Mark my words, we will never be a consistently winning program until O'Leary is gone. So quit drinking the O'Leary Kool-Aid and get a grip on reality.

As a true UCF fan and graduate of the school twice, I wouldn't go as far to say that UCF is on the verge of greatness. I think you have to be a good football team first, but that starts with consistency, and we don't have that yet. For the past few years, we have had one good season, then one bad season, and so on. Since we had a good year this year, my hope is that we can change the pattern and have another good season next year. I would consider this past season a good season, as we lost the games we were supposed to lose and came close against the two top conference teams. We had our first win against a ranked opponent and our freshman did a good job of adjusting to college football. The UCF football team has most (with the exception of a solid QB) of the pieces in place to be a good team, but again, it starts with consistency. I understand that people don't want O'Leary around anymore, but it is sort of foolish to ask the guy to resign over an 8 and 5 season and a solid recruiting class that is coming in. You also have to factor in the aspect of our football team having one of the highest GPAs in the countries, no criminals, etc. He is keeping the team disciplined on (fewest penalties this season in the NCAA) and off the field. Give the guy a break as he is doing more for the program than you give him credit for.

Ah yes, the oft-written "now is the time" column. You seem like a nice kid with good intentions, William, but you've missed a lot of history. We are not in our formative years. George is not laying the foundation. The foundation was here. George dismantled it, started to re-build, then tore it down again. Maybe, MAYBE now, in year SEVEN, he'll be able to build something.
I had no misconceptions about him when he arrived. He had an average career at GA Tech so I didn't expect him to turn us into a top 25 program, as he claimed he would. What I do expect is marked, CONSISTENT improvement.
We’ve seen this play before: winning season, bowl appearance and great recruits. The next scene is a losing season and loss of all momentum. Let’s see him change it. Let’s see him get back to the championship game and win a bowl game. THAT’S something to rally around.

UCF being able to compete for a national championship is just speculation. Of course nobody in their right mind would even assume that we could even come close. I don't. You don't get bashed by BCS teams from major conferences year after year and expect to win a national championship. We've had plenty of 3 star QBs including Grego who haven't been able to perform at UCF.

But it's speculation because it will all depend on how the conferences will shift. The Big 10 wants Rutgers, but there has been talk that the Big 10 might pirate more teams from the Big East if they decide to expand to a 14 team super conference. A possilbe team to take would be Pitt.

So then what happens to the Big East? It becomes an advanced Conference USA when the Big East pulls in Memphis, ECU, and UCF while already having teams like USF, Louisville and Cinci. Look at what happend to Cinci when they played Florida. They got spanked and they were undefeated partly because of a weak Big East. It's possible that this new Big East could lose its automatic BCS Bowl tie-in and become another mid major conference that everybody is trying to get out of.

TexasKnight has obviously neither:

(1) Heard the name Charlie Taaffe,
(2) Watched a down of UCF football in 2009, or
(3) Seen game film of Godfrey or Reese

Those two players are perfect for Taaffe's offense.

I wish getting these three Miami players would be a turning point for the program. However, I believe their talent will be wasted with us. With O'Dreary's stodgy, lethargic, archaic offense, they will never be able to accomplish anything great. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Knightfan, I agree that Calabrese isn't the starting QB for UCF in the future. However, your comments about Coach O'Leary show how little you know about (1) football and (2) collegiate athletics in general. It's cute that you have a nickname for the coach, and even know the names of the AD and a couple QB's on the roster... but your lack of ability to form coherent, fact-based thought is glaring.

Consider digging yourself a four foot hole in the backyard, and curling up in it for a couple of months.

Jamal, your comment is inaccurate. UCF is part of the Football Bowl Subdivision, which uses the BCS to determine the participants in the national championship game. UCF does not belong to a BCS AQ conference (a conference with an automatic bid to play in a BCS bowl), however that does not preclude UCF from being selected to play in one of those bowls (or the national championship game) on an at-large basis. Though far-fetched, there are scenarios in which UCF could play for a national championship from within CUSA.

That being said, I think the intent behind Godfrey's quote is under the assumption that UCF will be part of a BCS AQ conference by the time he graduates. Many people believe as such, but that is yet to be seen.

knightfan, thanks for epitomizing everything that is wrong with college athletics. If all you want to do is win at all costs, go root for the team 90 miles on I-4. You'll fit right in. I want to win, too, but I'm not willing to sell our soul to do it.

We will be in a BCS conference before Godfrey graduates.

we can't win a national championship.... we aren't BCS.... maybe someone should have mentioned that to the players during recruiting

There won't be any greatness coming out of George O'Leary, only years of misery. Promote Coach Kelly whose done a tremendous job with recruiting and get rid of Drunk O'Leary. Nobody can stand him, Come on Tribble, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. We all know the only reason O'Leary did well was because Hodges was able to produce and Calabrese wasn't able to choke
